The "R" Word

When I was in the 5th grade a kid--I think his name was Gene--asked me: "Are you retarded?". He was trying to be funny. A few moments later, Mrs. Werdin [spelling?] our math teacher called me to the front of the room to answer a math problem. Before I begin I got my shot in..."Well before I answer, Gene asked me if I was retarded...Yes, but not as much as you."

The class laughed, Mrs. Werdin didn't. She lectured us about how hurtful that word is and hurtful it is NOT to be used as a synonym for "stupid".

This stuck with me ever since. Let's say a comedian were to use the "N" word, or some other equivilent. That person's head would be called for. And while I belive in freedom of speech, perhaps their head should be served on a platter.

For years the "N" word has been used by African Americans entertianers [rap artists, comedias etc] but even they seem to be stopping. That makes sense. If they don't want Caucasions to use it, why should they use it themselves.

That said, I am SICK of the word "retarded" being used as "stupid". At the recent VMA awards, some British moron called President Bush "Retarded". The news isn't reporting this are they? Nope, not much. If the liberal media were to report it, then this idiot would look bad for his choice of words, and Bush would look good.

But, I digress. A few points here:

1. The reason I point out that this guy was British, is because:
A. We kicked their butts in 1776
B. We saved their butts in WW II
C. He's not an American. Here we have the freedom of speech to say stupid things like this. He's not an American...he doesn't have the same rights.

2. As stated above, I think that to use "retarded" as an insult is WRONG.

3. He said this about Bush. I like Bush. I know that American has a right to say what they want according to the Constition but what if he had called Obama the "N" word.

That'd be wrong, and even though I'm not going to vote for Obama, I'd be just as angry.



Mentally retarded children and adults are just as important to society as an idiot that uses that word as an insult. Not to mention the fact that they are often more loving.

Stop using "reterd" and/or "retarded" as an insult.
